VoIP/Internet Telephony

Introduction

Spoken communication via the Internet, better known as Internet telephony or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), takes place via the Internet connection and a free software program, such as the popular program Skype™. When two people both use VoIP, they can call each other from anywhere in the world for free.

Main advantages of VoIP

  • Price: You can make phone calls for free, since you are using the Internet connection instead of a telephone connection.
  • Flexibility: You can make a call from anywhere you have (broadband) Internet connectivity.
Types
  • VoIP-Station/Box:
With a VOIP-Station/Box, a home telephone and a computer with a broadband connection, it is possible to make free telephone calls via the Internet. By placing the station/box between the telephone connection and the telephone and then connecting the station/box to the computer, it is possible to choose between making a telephone call via the Internet or via the normal telephone line.
  • VoIP-Phone:
A VoIP-Phone looks, feels and works like a normal phone, but plugs into your computer instead of into your phone connection, enabling you to make free telephone calls via the Internet.
  • VoIP-PBX:
A VoiP PBX operates exactly like a traditional digital PBX but with the added benefit of VoIP. Inter branch calls become free, maybe you have a building that is only linked via fibre so a traditional PBX that requires copper (CW1308,CAT5e,CAT6 etc) is no use, with VoIP you can use your data fibre link for voice. Old PBX's with no VoIP support can have VoIP gateways fitted to an extension to make them VoIP compatible. Although they won't benefit from the other features of new VoIP PBX's this can be an ideal interim solution.

VoIP setup

Many companies now are realising the benefit VoIP can bring to them. Companies with branch offices and existing VPN's ( Virtual Private Networks, eg, BT's Net Equip VPN) can now make free inter branch calls via the VPN. In some cases this involves nothing more than an upgrade of the routers and/or line specification. The savings can be huge and can pay for the equipment in no time at all. Existing PBX's (Private Branch Exchange) can have VoIP gateways added or if you are looking to upgrade your equipment then look no further than Panasonics KX-TDA range!
