News of BT Line Boxes (NTE5 etc)

BT Openreach will discontinue the use of the XNTE when current stocks are exhausted. This is due to the fact that the new vDSL services require a SSFP (Service Specific Face Plate) which in turn require.....an NTE5 socket!! We saw this coming from day 1!! As the external NTE is fitted to more & more homes the issue of centralised ADSL filtering is becoming more of an issue. You will be pleased to learn you can fit a standard NTE5A to the external NTE and then fit a centralised ADSL faceplate such as the NTE2000 or NTE2005 to the new NTE5A to achieve centralised filtering. The I Plate has been rebranded for some time now, it is now known as the BT Broad Band Accelerator. Note the item design is unchaged from the original I Plate, nothing has changed other than the name!!!

So...here's the inside of my old "master socket". I can tell it's the master socket since it has the surge protector. I can see the BT trunk line with the mass of coloured wires...however it seems like the people who originally wired it up when the house was built only used the blue and white wires, and have connected wires from another cable.

Openreach have started to fit external NTE's in place of the popular NTE5 socket. The only real benefit is to Openreach themselves as the new socket means they can easily disconnect any internal wiring & diagnose line faults without requiring entry to the premises. However, if you have ADSL then you should consider changing the first socket on any internal wiring so you can benefit from a centralised ADSL faceplate such as the NTE2000, NTE2005 ...

We've had customers contact us regarding some information currently on the Internet. This information claims if your NTE5 has the moulding for the bell wire filter then you are OK. Unfortunately this is NOT the case. There was a transitional period when the moulding was in place but the inductor(filter) was not fitted to the PCB. To use an IDC tool is very simple, there is no need to remove the insulation from the wire.

IDC Tool:-



First lay the wires over the top of the IDC block :-



Then use the IDC tool to push the wire firmly into the block, note the tool will only fit one way :-
