Service Specific Faceplates (SSFPs)

Service Specific Faceplates or "SSFPs" is the term BT Openreach use to describe a faceplate that fits onto the NTE5 (Network Terminating Equipment) type master socket. Basically the NTE2000, NTE2005 and the new premium ADSL/VDSL faceplate are all SSFP's!

BT Openreach wiring-new colour scheme

BT Openreach are using new cables with new colour codes. The old wiring scheme was as follows :-

Connector 2 - Blue with White Rings
Connector 3 - Orange with White Rings
Connector 5 - White with Blue Rings

This has now changed to :-

Connector 2 - Blue
Conector 3 - Brown
Connector 5 - Orange

BT Extension Wiring Faults

The following covers some common extension wiring issues.

Problem
Phone ringing continuously
Cause
Terminals 2 and 5 swapped between sockets (2 at one socket connected to 5 on another and vice versa)

No ringing
Cause
Terminal 3 disconnected

Problem
Ringing but no speech (or very poor speech) and can't dial out.
Cause
Wire between terminals 2 or 5 broken.

Problem
Very poor speech quality, possibly poor bell
Cause
Terminal 3 and 2 or 3 ...

CAT5e Wiring Standards

There are two wiring standards for CAT5e, 568A & 568B, the colour code is as follows :-

568A Wiring Standard

A cross over cable just uses the wiring configuration from each standard at each end! ie, 568A at one end & 568B at the other. Modern devices rarely require cross over cables. 568B is the most popular wiring standard in use.

CCS & CCA "CW1308"

Customers should be aware of CCS (Copper Clad Steel) & CCA (Copper Clad Aluminium) that is being sold elsewhere & wrongly claimed to be CW1308 specification. CW1308 specification requires the cable to be pure copper & twisted pair. A lot of cable that is being sold is also so poorly twisted it could not be described as twisted pair! Removing the bell wire?

Removing the bell wire(pin 3 on the IDC block of the MASTER socket, eg, NTE5) can certainly improve ADSL performance IF you have internal extension wiring. However removing the bell wire is against the BT wiring specification. So what can you do?
